Best drip coffee makers buying guide

Coffee lovers know that a bad cup of java can pretty much ruin a morning. This is why it makes sense to purchase not just the right brand of coffee, but the right machine to prepare it in. Not all drip coffee makers are created equal. Here are some factors to keep in mind while you’re shopping:

Heat
Some coffee drinkers aren’t happy unless their morning beverage practically scorches their mouth, while others are content to ease into the morning with a cozy, warm cup. And then there’s the matter of it staying warm once it’s brewed. If you’re the type to nurse a pot of coffee all morning long, consider a machine with a heat-sealing stainless-steel-lined carafe, like the Bonavita BV1800SS 8-cup original coffee brewer. Otherwise, a machine with a glass carafe and heating element, like the Cuisinart DCC-2600, is a good choice.

Ease of Programming
If you’d rather drink day-old coffee than read the instruction manual, look for a machine with intuitive programming, such as the Hamilton Beach 12-cup digital coffee maker.

Quantity
If you’re the sole coffee drinker in the house, a high-volume machine might be overkill, though you can program the Hamilton Beach Summit Ultra to make you two cups or 12, if you’re having guests over. Or you can opt for a single-serving coffee maker.

Timing
Both Bunn coffee makers profiled here keep their water reservoir heated, so they can deliver a pot of coffee in a mind-boggling three minutes. But if you’re not in a rush, the Cuisinart DCC-3200 scored higher overall.

Neatness counts
Even a great brew might not be worth a big mess. The Bunn BT Velocity Brew was rated easy to clean, but users complained that pouring the coffee was often a messy endeavor.

Footprint
If you have a kitchen with miles of countertop, the size of your coffee maker probably isn’t a concern. If not, figure out where you’re going to put it, and bust out a tape measure before you buy. While users were enthusiastic about the Hamilton Beach Summit Ultra’s coffee-making ability, its height makes it difficult to tuck it under overhead cabinets. Both Bonnavita models, on the other hand, were lauded for their compact size.
