If you’re looking for the cheapest car insurance in Idaho, you probably know that costs vary widely depending on a variety of factors including your age, gender and ZIP code.
To help Gem State drivers in their quest for the best deal, NerdWallet researched the two cheapest car insurance options for each of the following categories:
Cheapest for good drivers
For drivers with no at-fault accidents, DUIs or moving violations.
Car insurance rates for good drivers in Idaho are among the country’s lowest. Our research found that Safeco had the cheapest car insurance in Idaho, with Geico offering similar coverage at about $30 more per month.
Cheapest for young drivers
For drivers younger than 25.
Safeco was significantly less expensive than Geico for covering our sample young driver. On top of its low rates, Safeco also provides several discounts aimed specifically at teens and young adults, such as those for being a good student or completing a driver training course. Geico offers many of the same coverage options, but charges more.
Cheapest for high-mileage drivers
For drivers who drive more than 40 miles a day.
Idaho drivers with heavy commutes can still secure low premiums. Safeco had the best rates, more than $30 per month cheaper on average than the next lowest provider, Geico. Both companies offer discounts for bundling policies and driving safely, and both provide rental reimbursement and roadside assistance plans, which will appeal to those who spend a lot of time in the car.
Cheapest for drivers with imperfect records
For drivers who have had at-fault accidents, DUIs or moving violations.
Geico’s rates for drivers with an accident or violation went up much more than Safeco’s, creating a significant price difference; an average of $45 per month separated the two insurers. Both companies offer accident forgiveness, which could further protect customers’ wallets if they have minor incidents behind the wheel.
Minimum Idaho car insurance requirements
Idaho requires all drivers to have liability insurance, which kicks in to help cover others’ injuries or property damage if you cause an accident. You must select at least the following minimums:
- $25,000 bodily injury liability per person
- $50,000 bodily injury liability per accident
- $15,000 property damage liability per accident
Insurance companies are also obligated to include uninsured motorist protection in your policy. However, you can decline this coverage in writing.

Alternative car insurance in Idaho
Idaho is one of several states that make up the Western Association of Automobile Insurance Plans (WAAIP). If you’re having trouble obtaining car insurance from traditional insurers because of a spotty record, poor credit or other factors, the WAAIP can help connect you to companies that accept high-risk drivers.

NerdWallet ran rates from the largest insurers in Idaho across several ZIP codes. We tested for drivers with no accidents or violations, drivers younger than 25, drivers who travel more than 40 miles per day, and drivers with violations or accidents on their record. We used a Ford F-150 as our sample vehicle, the most popular car in Idaho.
