According to PBS, department store pioneer John Wanamaker spearheaded the first-ever January white sale in 1878 as a way to move inventory and entice shoppers, and retailers have been discounting linens in January ever since. These sales were originally called white sales because linens used to only be available in white.
Retailers, including department stores such as J.C. Penney and Macy’s and online marketplaces such as Overstock and Amazon, carry on the white sales legacy. Today, you can even find other household necessities — such as kitchen utensils — included in these sweeping home sales.
