Insurance costs vary depending on your age, gender, credit history and several other factors. Prices can even swing dramatically from one insurer to the next for seemingly no reason at all, which is why shopping around and comparing quotes is so important.
To help drivers find the cheapest Mississippi car insurance, NerdWallet researched the two lowest options in the state for the following motorist categories:
Cheapest for safe drivers
For drivers with no at-fault accidents, DUIs or moving violations.
For drivers with clean records, Safeco came in at about $15 cheaper per month in our study than the next closest competitor, USAA. Only active or retired military and their families qualify for USAA, and these customers may find that membership perks on things like travel and shopping are worth the extra premium. But for those who aren’t eligible, Safeco is still a great and affordable choice.
Cheapest for young drivers
For drivers younger than 25.
For Mississippi’s younger drivers, USAA and Safeco scored almost identical quotes in our test. Both companies have multiple discounts and rewards aimed at first-time drivers, but Safeco has the slight edge in that department. Parents can also be assured that their children can depend on either USAA or Safeco in a crisis; both companies have great ratings for customer service.
Cheapest for high-mileage drivers
For drivers who travel more than 40 miles per day.
Safeco notched average quotes almost $20 a month less than USAA for drivers who spend a lot of time behind the wheel. Both companies offer roadside assistance and rental reimbursement services, which could come in handy for people who depend on their vehicles.
Cheapest for drivers with imperfect records
For drivers who’ve had at-fault accidents, DUIs or moving violations.
Our research found that Mississippi drivers with spotty records could score quotes $30 per month lower with Safeco than with the next closest competitor, USAA. Both companies offer an array of discounts — including those for bundling policies and taking a driver safety course — and key features like accident forgiveness.
Minimum car insurance requirements in Mississippi
Mississippi drivers are required to carry liability insurance. If you’re ever found at-fault for an accident, this coverage goes toward paying others’ injury treatment or property damage.
The minimum limits are:
- $25,000 bodily injury liability per person
- $50,000 bodily injury liability per accident
- $25,000 property damage liability per accident
Bear in mind, experts recommend getting more than the minimum, as an at-fault crash could easily result in injury or repair bills higher than the amounts listed above. You may also want to consider common add-ons such as collision, comprehensive and uninsured motorist protection.

Alternative car insurance in Mississippi
Drivers who are unable to buy Mississippi car insurance through the open market may qualify for coverage through the state’s High Risk or Assigned Risk network. This option may be ideal for drivers with severe violations on their record, poor credit history or other personal factors keeping them from getting traditional coverage.
