If you’re looking for cheap auto insurance in Oklahoma, you already know that finding the best deal can be challenging. Insurance costs vary depending on your age, gender, ZIP code and other factors.
To help Oklahomans make sense of the car insurance market, NerdWallet researched rates from the seven largest insurers in the state and found the two cheapest options for the following groups:
Cheapest for safe drivers
For drivers with no at-fault accidents, DUIs or moving violations
State Farm and USAA provide very similar coverage options and discount opportunities at a very similar price. If you’re eligible — if you or a member of your family is a current or former military member — consider choosing USAA. The company consistently ranks among the best in customer service. Non-military folks won’t be disappointed with State Farm, which also has a reputation for excellent service.
Cheapest for young drivers
For drivers in their early 20s
Although USAA slightly edged out State Farm in our test for the lowest rates for young drivers, both companies are a good bet. Those who qualify will be pleased with USAA’s service and coverage options, including accident forgiveness — an asset for young drivers without much experience behind the wheel. State Farm customers enrolled in college can save money with the Student Away at School discount.
Cheapest for high-mileage drivers
For drivers who travel more than 40 miles a day
State Farm came out slightly ahead of USAA in terms of price for high-mileage drivers. State Farm’s car rental and travel expenses coverage also might make a difference for some. This feature helps drivers with hotel expenses, car rental and other costs if they’re away from home and in need of a car repair. USAA users get similar benefits — including rental reimbursement — and benefit from great customer service.
Cheapest for drivers with imperfect records
For drivers who’ve had at-fault accidents, DUIs or moving violations
State Farm’s sample premiums for higher-risk drivers were significantly cheaper than USAA’s. But if you’re an accident-prone USAA customer, the company’s accident forgiveness program might prevent your rates from going up after your first accident with the company (or first in a while), which could help offset the cost difference. Both companies offer emergency roadside assistance if you need it.
Minimum required auto insurance in Oklahoma
Oklahoma drivers must at least carry liability insurance, which helps pay for others’ property repairs or injury treatment if you’re ever at fault in an accident.
The minimum amounts you must buy are:
- $25,000 bodily injury liability per person
- $50,000 bodily injury liability per incident
- $25,000 property damage liability per incident
While this is enough to drive legally, motorists may want more than the bare minimum for better financial protection. If you crashed into a luxury sports car, for example, the property damage costs could easily exceed the $25,000 minimum limit. And you’d be on the hook for the remainder of the settlement.

Alternative car insurance in Oklahoma
If poor credit, a spotty driving record or other factors are preventing you from getting auto insurance in Oklahoma, you may qualify for coverage through the Oklahoma Automobile Insurance Plan (OAIP). This network of agents was established to help high-risk drivers who are denied coverage on the voluntary market get the protection they need.

METHODOLOGY
NerdWallet ran rates from the largest insurers in Oklahoma across several ZIP codes. We tested for drivers with no accidents or violations, drivers younger than 25, drivers who travel more than 40 miles per day, and drivers with violations or accidents on their record. We used a Nissan Altima as our sample vehicle, the most popular car in Oklahoma. These are just sample rates; your own rates will vary.
